CHAPTER SIXTEEN

"Vesta, water my plants," Norah said. Thunder rumbled softly near the ceiling as her magical assistant floated placidly into the air. Small clouds appeared above the houseplants in Norah's living room, emitting a pleasant patter of rain. With early morning light slanting through the windows, the effect was idyllic.

In a vase in the living room window, the cantankerose jerked to its full height. “What the fuck? I was napping!”

Norah shushed him. Lodi the philodendron, whom she had taken as a hostage, was not thriving in its new environment. Pepe had treated the plant as his personal salad bar until Norah lectured him on maintaining bargaining power.

"You're gonna be okay, bud," she told the plant, guiltily eyeing a half-chewed leaf near its base. "Don't you want to have fun with your new friends?" she asked the collection of wan green leaves, gesturing at the Oriceran plants, which sparkled with light along their veins.

"L is for the way your leaves are green," she sang softly. "O is oxygen you maaaake for meeee..."

A huff from the cantankerose was not drowned out by the small cloud over its head. “Oh, yeah, sure. Like that stray-cat screeching is going to turn things around for Sadboy McWilty here.” Norah shot blue magic into the cloud over the rose’s head, and the resulting flood shut him up.

Her Oriceran aloe swayed under the misting from its small cloud, joined by Norah's other plants.

"How come you never sang for me?" a voice from the kitchen doorway asked. Norah reached for her wand, only to drop her hand back to her side with a grin when she saw the hovering six-sided figure.

"Cleo!" Norah squealed and ran over to embrace the flying wooden crate. The cursed pixie seemed the same, though her winged Hermes sneakers were caked with fine black dirt.

"I've missed you."

"Hmmm, likely story," Cleo said. "Pepe let me in. I see he’s already replaced me in your affections." As she spoke, the runes carved into her side glowed, and she kicked the corner of Pepe's half-eaten luxury dog bed.

The lock on the front door clicked open. Norah dove for her wand again, then relaxed at the sound of hoofbeats in the hall. The tuft of white hair on Pepe’s chin waggled as he poked his head in.

"Welcome home,” Norah muttered, eyeing the housekey gripped between the goat's lips. It was attached to a fetching pink velvet ribbon wound around his black-and-white ruff. When he spat out the key, a drop of drool landed on Norah's shoe.

"I pay rent here," Norah muttered. "It's not a boarding house."

"Oh, please. I lived here for years. I could probably claim squatter’s rights. And Pepe knows me," Cleo added. Norah was once again amazed by the cube’s ability to shrug.

"What brings you home?"

Cleo glowed brightly. "I got a job as a camera operator!"

Norah glanced at Cleo's wooden feet and raised an eyebrow. Cleo flew over and kicked her in the arm.

"Don't give me that look. It's a remote-control system. I'm like a drone, but with better reaction speeds and more artistry.
